Das Frühstück ist ausgezeichnet. Und wir haben keine Eile, es sind nur ca. 250 km zum Augrabis Nationalpark unserem heutigen Ziel. Erst einmal im slagthuis Fleisch einkaufen. Peter erzählt, dass nach seinen Informationen das Restaurant in Augrabis sehr gut sein soll. Ich bezweifele das, da ich bisher in keinem SANPARK ein akzeptables Restaurant gefunden habe. Aber wir schaun einmal. Dann noch in der Kahalahri Mall bei Checkers die restlichen Lebensmittel einkaufen und los geht es entlang des Oranie nach Augrabis.

Im National Park angekommen ist es zu früh, um unsere Hütte zu beziehen. So setzen wir uns erst einmal in Restaurant und sehen einer Meerkatze zu wie sie das Tomatenketchup vom leeren Teller am Nachbartisch schleckt. Peters Information scheint zu stimmen. Das Sandwich schmeckt gut. (Später am Abend bestätigt sich dies. Wir essen sehr guten Sprinbock und Kudu) Bei unsere Ankunft um 12 Uhr betrugt die Temperatur nur 27°. Innerhalb weniger Stunden (um 15 Uhr) steigt die Temperatur bei nachlassendem Wind auf 35° an. Trotzdem gehen wir die wenigen Meter hinab auf die Aussichtplattformen und betrachten die tiefe Schlucht welche sich der Oranie hier in den harten Granit gegraben hat. Im Augenblick fließt allerdings wenig Wasser über den Fall. Es lässt sich aber sehr gut erahnen – und auf Bildern vor der Rezeption betrachten – wie es ist, wenn hier Hochwasser fließt. The breakfast is excellent. And we are in no hurry, it is only about 250 km to the Augrabis National Park our today's destination. First of all, shopping in slagthuis meat. Peter says that according to his information the restaurant in Augrabis should be very good. I doubt that because I have not found an acceptable restaurant in any SANPARK. But let's see. Then in the Kahalahri Mall at Checkers the remaining food shopping and off we go along the Oranie to Augrabis.

Arriving at the National Park it is too early to move into our cabin. So we sit down first in the restaurant and watch a meerkat as she licks the tomato ketchup from the empty plate at the next table. Peter's information seems to be correct. The sandwich tastes good. (Later in the evening this is confirmed, we eat very good Sprinbuck and Kudu.) When we arrived at 12 o'clock the temperature was only 27 °. Within a few hours (at 15 o'clock) the temperature rises to 35 ° when the wind decreases. Nevertheless, we go down the few meters on the viewing platforms and look at the deep ravine which the Oranie has dug here in the hard granite. At the moment, however, little water flows over the fall. But it can be very well guessed - and look at pictures in front of the reception - as it is when floods here. Wir haben beschlossen heute mit dem Auto bis ans Ende des Parkes zu fahren. Es gibt 2 Varianten , einen 4x4 Trail, der allerdings nur mit 2 Autos befahren werden darf. Variante 2, die wir dann wählen müssen ist die Gravel road mit verschiedenen Loops. Man glaubt es kaum aber auf den ersten Kilometern sind 3 Wasserdurchfahrten (nicht tief) zu durchfahren. Wir vermuten es ist Wasser das aus den nahegelegenen bewässerten Plantagen (Zitrone oder Trauben) kommt. Die Landschaft wird immer spektakulärer. Es geht auf und ab die Hügel strahlen fast gleichzeitig in Rot, Weiß, Ocker. Dazwischen meint man jemand hätte alte Autoreifen abgelegt, es sind aber schwarze Stein die in Mitten von braunen Sand auf einmal herumliegen. Ganz am Ende der Straße gibt es dann einen Picnic Spot. Leben sieht man hier recht selten. Ab und an einige Springböcke, oder gelegentlich ein Oryx oder Kudu. Aber nur vereinzelt. Das Buschwerk sieht sehr vertrocknet aus und nur an den wenigen Wasserstellen ist einmal ein grünes Blatt zu sehen. Dafür umso mehr Landschaft.

We decided today to drive to the end of the park by car. There are 2 variants, a 4x4 Trail, which may be used only with 2 cars. Variant 2, which we then have to choose is the gravel road with different loops. You hardly believe it but on the first kilometers you have to drive through 3 water passages (not deep). We suspect it is water coming from the nearby irrigated plantations (lemon or grapes). The landscape is getting more and more spectacular. It goes up and down the hills radiate almost simultaneously in red, white, ocher. In between one thinks someone has discarded old car tires, but there are black stones lying in the middle of brown sand all at once. At the very end of the street there is a picnic spot. Life is rarely seen here. Now and then some springboks, or occasionally an oryx or kudu. But only occasionally. The shrubbery looks very dry and only at the few waterholes is a green leaf to see. But all the more landscape.

Am nächsten Morgen, in der kühle des Tages, machen wir uns auf einen der kleinerern Hiking Trails. Es gibt hier 3 kürzere, 2 2,8 km (ca. 1,5-2 Std) lang und einer der ca. 6 km lang ist. Dann gibt es noch einen 3 Tages Trail am Fluss entlang, aber nur in der kalten Jhareszeit von Juni bis Anfang Oktober. Peter will den grüneren der beiden laufen und so schlagen wir uns dann – erst angenehm, aber immer mehr und mehr – 1,5 Std durch wahres Dickicht und über umgestürzte Bäume hinweg. – Ganz anders als Erwartet – Den Rest des Tages erholen wir uns in unserem schönen Cottage unter der Klimaanlage. Abends geht’s dann erst nochmal runter zu den Fällen und dann ab ins Restaurant zu Kudu und Springbock.

The next morning, in the cool of the day, we go on one of the smaller hiking trails. There are 3 shorter, 2 2.8 km (about 1.5-2 hours) long and one of about 6 km long. Then there is a 3-day trail along the river, but only in the cold Jhareszeit from June to the beginning of October. Peter wants to run the greener of the two and then we hit ourselves - first pleasant, but more and more and more - 1.5 hours through true thickets and fallen trees over. - Quite different than expected - rest the rest of the day in our beautiful cottage under the air conditioning. In the evening it's time to get down to the falls and then off to the restaurant for kudu and springbok.

Heute ist dann Abreisetag. Zurück nach Upington. Bevor wir losfahren drehen wir noch eine kurze Runde im Park. Neben einen schönen Ausblick auf den Oranie, vielen interessanten Steinen (manche sehen aus wie ein Herz, andere haben solapanele) entdecken wir den Lovehide, von dem wir beschließen, sollten wir noch einmal hierherkommen, diesen anzumieten. Das Chalet liegt einsam gelegen am Abbruch des Tales mit einem beindruckenden Blick auf den Fishriver. Good Bye Augrabis. Hello Kalagagadi

Today is departure day. Back to Upington. Before we leave, we'll do a little lap in the park. In addition to a beautiful view of the Oranie, many interesting stones (some look like a heart, others have solapanele) we discover the Lovehide, of which we decide, should we come here again to rent this.
